General Dollar Store

Margaret Sharra is proposing to tear down the historic yellow home at 71 Main Street (located between the ELMCC & VFW) in order to build a 9,100 square foot GENERAL DOLLAR store.
What is your opinion?

Historic District Commission meeting scheduled for Monday, April 25th at 7 PM.

Outrageous idea. We already have a "dollar type store" in town and certainly don't need to have another especially in our Historic downtown district. That was once a lovely house and could be again. Would be nice to have a little quality in town such as "The Inkwell" that we lost at Kulicks but not on our busy main street in that location.

She owns it and she can do what she wants, but it sure as heck not going to make her any friends, not that she gives a s--- about that.

Someone buy this woman a bus ticket out of town. Hasn't she already ruined this town with those damn motorcycle race tracks and the numerous lawsuits she keeps getting named in? Time for the good people of Winchester to send her a loud and clear message .. GET LOST !!!

Doesn't Margaret head up the Revitalization & Economic Development committee? Why would someone on the committee think that tearing down the history of our town to put in another commercial building will make Winchester more appealing? It clearly does not make any sense. Greed is the only thing that comes to mind.

Keene has one Dollar Store. What makes this company think that Winchester could support two? It's going to resemble Hinsdales fireworks stores all lines up in a row. Outrageous!

Maybe Mary Ryan and Mike Towne can get together and buy it to preserve the beautiful downtown.

At least if I owned it it wouldn't look like the dump it is today. Funny how the town will go after some owners for eyesores but not others. Guess it is; "who you know" after all.

Wonder if Maggie will put this plan before the planning board and recuse herself? Funny how if you associate with particular people you can do whatever the hell you want.

Where do we start the petition to keep the historic district historic?

Does anyone know? said...

Did Margaret inherit that house? I heard that she kicked her tenants out without much warning, so that she could sell it. Is this true?

What is she out of her mind????? Oops we already know her mind is never in the best interests or concerns of anyone but herself!!! Another junk store is all we need !!!! This is a totally ludicrous idea for downtown.

she speaks with forked tongue said...

She may own that property; but she still has to follow the laws and abide by the Historical District regulations. Of course she sits on the ZBA as it's so-called secretary and can always persuade her buddies to give her a special exception. She cares nothing for this town and it's citizens, all she cares about is lining her own pockets. She just puts on a show when she talks about working to improve the town all you have to do is look at that house to see how she works to improve Winchester.

If you don't like it, pony up the cash, buy it, and then do with it as you want. Otherwise, pay attention to your own property/trailer.

My what a little smart mouth we have attracted here. Live free or Die go find some other sandbox to play in, no one cares for your juvenile comments. People are right to complain when laws are not equally enforced for all of the town's citizens and a few are allowed to do whatever they want. This is what is wrong with Winchester and the people elected to serve the community, they instead serve themselves and circumvent rules and regulations for personal gain and a profit.

So if they get elected, what does that mean? Does that not mean the majority of our Town believe what is going on is Ok with them? One of WI cronies gets 50 votes.. what does that mean? I know... you are smarter than the overwhelming majority of the voting public.

I bet you won't post this will you?

A sad and confusing thing I just don't get about property's in these historic districts is that its OK that they can be run down fall apart and be ugly as all hell as this house in question is, and there are no rules against that. but sometimes when someone wants to improve, update and make it look a lot better they can be hassled or stopped from doing so.something just doesn't seem right about that. I think it is actually discouraging people from fixing up some of these eyesores we have around town, What do you think?

Anonymous said...

There are rules against letting your property become an eyesore and some people in town have been taken to court over this while others, case in point, seem to be overlooked. If Ms. Sharra is so concerned with beautifying downtown Winchester; perhaps she should start with her own eyesore. Oh wait, that would mean spending her own money and not the taxpayers, how stupid of me to suggest something like that.

Anonymous said...

I think the only people that have been taken to court was because of junk in their yards like the house on the corner of rt10 and Lawrence st. I have never seen anyone taken to court because of the actual condition of the house. Both houses on either side of the ELMM front yard are eyesores. If they were ever taken to court they could claim they cant afford to repair the way the Historical commision demands and it would most likely be dropped.

Think about it said...

Excuse me, but you seem to forget that Margaret runs the department that would prosecute those that don't maintain their property. So, WHY would she do that to herself?

Different rules for different folks, enough said.

To fix the Sharra sty up, Maybe the Sharra family can file for a grant from the federal community development money from the town... wait this is not correct.....We spent the last $70,000 helping one of the “circle of friends” installing water and sewage for a development on the Snow Road owned by Gary Beaman..

If I were a member of the historic district I would just vote yes. We all know that Maggie knows how to beat the system and get her own way. Until one of her cronies finds out that she has stiffed them she will get whatever she wants. That is the drill in Winchester.

Just remember that if you show up at the meeting she takes names and numbers. Forewarned is forearmed!

She's just a pouty little frog swimming in a small pond and thinks she's someone to be reckoned with. She's all croak and no bite. She knows better than to try and pull this crap; but she's so greedy she has to try.

Can't wait for the races to start. I love my town.

So if someone wants to sell/lease their property to improve it, increase tax revenue for the town, we should oppose it? Interesting concept. Oh no, it would be better to have the status quo. At least if we have a retail store instead of an apartment building we have less kids in the school system and good tax revenue. Ever think or that?

to Smokin Joe:

Yes, we've thought of that...however; as nice as it would be to have such an enterprise - NOT - it would be the second one in town which is a bit crazy, and there is plenty of land available west on 119 and elsewhere that would be more suitable for any such tax revenue venture than the town Historic District. Something to improve the image of Wincheter, perhaps?

How about another asphalt plant or another dump (Triple T ) or how about a large stinky smokey so-called "green" power plant? I think not, but with the people we have in charge and their greedy paws in the mix, it's a crap shoot with what THEY decide comes here.

Anonymous said...

Keep up the good work Informer. IF we follow your logic soon we will have more abandoned buildings, no investment, higher taxes on the property owners that remain, and no more races. I think I prefer the alternative. Let people do what they want with their property. I would never tell you what to do with your property.

Well Joe, it seems whatever you're smoking has scrambled your thought process. We merely posted a subject on the blog, the comments are from concerned citizens.
The fact that we have higher taxes, empty homes and abandoned buildings in town and that the numbers are growing has nothing to do with this blog, it's a lack of leadership, greed and an air of entitlement and personal gain, that has made the town a burden on it's citizen's.
Keep knocking our efforts to provide information to the public, it does not bother us and the truth shall prevail; besides without us who would you and your little group of cronies have to talk about?

go get em Smokin Joe, you have been right on the money, unlike most the posters here on the informer.

Well Joe, I agree with people doing what they want with there property, put I'm betting the owners would have a big problem with this if it was some one else raking in the dough. It's funny how we preach one thing and do another when it benefits us.

Anonymous said...

Money Talks..... it seems posters on WI blog, and the WI bloggers themselves complain whenever anything wants to get going in town. The Planning Board and other boards seem to respect property owners rights favoring development of property. Why change? We still live in America and in New Hampshire where people do have property rights.

If I remember correctly the owner of the boarding house got sabotaged at the town hall a few years ago when he had a potential sale.As for present days, I understand the owner has had two chances to sell but wouldn't because the buyer was going to make it a multi apartment dwelling that may have had a big impact on our school.I say GOOD FOR HIM, most people wouldn't turn down a decent offer regardless of how much it would cost the town,

Do you think for one minute this chick is going to act any differently in her personal life than she does for the town. You all have a chance to dump this individual at election time, let's make it happen. She is a cancer on this town.

So slum lord Sharra evicts her tenants for this cockamamie scheme so she doesn't have to repair her falling apart tenant building. She's a real beauty isn't she? And what's with hiring Silas Little, isn't he also representing Mitchell and the asphalt plant? Isn't that a direct conflict of interest situation? Gotta be more than just one lawyer they can all share in this area.
Beaman's hire Little to stop Mitchell from building on Manning Hill road, too many nice homes out there. Mitchell hires Little to help with opposition from neighbors fighting the asphalt plant in their neighborhood. Sharra then hires Little to help her build an unallowed store in the Historic District ... does anyone think something fishy is going on here?
