Letter to the Editor of the Brattleboro Reformer

We received the following request to republish this letter to the editor of the Reformer.

Hello- If you would please post Norman's letter to the Brattleboro Reformer on your web site. Thank you- Peter Gaskill

Editor of the Reformer:

I would like to take a moment and clear up some information presented in a letter in Tuesdays May 26 Reformer in regards to my proposed compost and solid waste transfer station in Winchester.

While it is true we need a zoning change for this project the property is zoned Agricultural and Industrial. These classifications in Winchester zoning allow such uses as: Institutional residents, Retail Business/ Consumer services, Office, Open air retail Industry, and sand and gravel pits.

The project is proposed on a 25 acres site that is within a 106 acre tract. The proposed operation is separated from the highway and neighboring properties by a wooded buffer area. The access is on route 119, outside the Village of Ashuelot and where the State has upgraded the highway for heavier traffic a little more then a half mile from the Ashuelot Covered Bridge. Presently I operate a solid waste transfer station less then a mile from downtown Brattleboro. This transfer station has operated over 14 years without a complaint.

The location of this property is what has drawn us to it. It is a short distance to the intersections of routes 119, 10 and 78. All routes that would be utilized not just route 119. The truck sizes are not all tractor trailers, but many smaller single and double axle straight trucks.

What I am proposing is a business model looking towards the future. Yes, green is the buzzword, but the economics and the science make it work. I encourage anybody who is interested to contact my office by phone (802)254-5388 or e-mail peter@tripletrubbishremoval.com . I am more then glad to meet with concerned/ interested people to address concerns and mis-conceptions.

I am a Vermont resident it is true. I care about Aushoulot more then you may believe. My wife Mary was raised in a little house in Aushoulot Village, and on the wall in my home is a painting of the Ashuelot covered bridge.

Perhaps we all need to drive by their facility in Brattleboro. This could be the reason that their town does not want anymore mess! I do believe that this town has told this group no so we must keep on fighting. Apparently like all of my students "no" is a tough word to understand-of course it has to be the "o" in the word. We all should conintue to practice "no".

Dont drive by take a tour of the facility to get a true preception of the operation. Ask your questions and make your comments directly to the owner, he obviously does not have anything to hide - he invited you.

I have been by your facility many times - may I point out that your neighbors are a graveyard and Cersosimo. Whose going to complain? Besides, it's a transfer station which is a whole different beast than a dump. Excuse me, "Resource Recovery Park".

Keep in mind Norman & Peter, that we have nothing against you as individuals (other than your arrogance of pushing a cart before the horse), it's that you are trying to force a business onto us that we have fought MANY years to keep out of our town. Hence the ordinance that you are persistent in changing to meet your needs.

Remember, we don't want ANY dumps in our town. If we allow yours, we are opening the doors to ALL. This is why we are angry and frustrated, and hope that you grasp that we will fight tooth and nail to keep ALL but our waste transfer station out of Winchester / Ashuelot.

Thank you for your kind letter!

You neglected to mention that it is right next to one of the only rare 1/2 mile stretch in New Hampshire (besides Hinsdale), in which you can get a view of the Ashuelot River. And a stone throw from one of the most photographed covered bridge in our state.

We are proud of the beauty tourist behold when driving that stretch and it would be a shame to see it blemished with a dump, (tree buffers or not, it will be seen and smelled).

Not to mention the dangers of polluting the river we have worked hard at cleaning up.

Mr Mallory-
If your process is so wonderful and benign, perhaps you should be siting it in Vernon. That is what the voters of Winchester had to say in March, and that is what we will continue to say. We may not be a rich community, but we are not so poor that we will be reduced to taking other communities trash. Go save the planet in Vermont and leave us alone.

Vermont, Brattleboro in particular, are always complaining about the loss of green spaces, and here is a Vermont company pushing its way into our community taking some of our green space. If they feel a close relationship to Ashuelot, build a house and a picnic table and enjoy the river views and the quiet life.

NO does mean No.

Here is a question for Mr Mallory and Mr Gaskil - Ignoring all other issues, what benefit will the town of Winchester see from this? Some posters have raised legitimate questions about jobs and revenue, so please answer this - How many Winchester residents are you planning to employ and how much revenue (in taxes and tipping fees) can we the taxpayers expect?

Please build a house in Ashuelot Mr. Mallory and see how this project affects the value. Also, the smell and the traffic. The picture that you have will not be destroyed by traffic etc.

To the anonymous posters in favor of this project ..

Have you ever gotten stuck in traffic behind a large container truck hauling garbage and waste ? I think not, otherwise you'd not be so eager to have all this coming into our town. You're entitled to your opinion as is everyone else who posts on this blog. The facts are, voters went to the polls and voted a resounding no, not in our town, we don't want it. There's no benefit for us, the townspeople, no help with our soaring taxes and very few if any jobs coming out of this proposal. It is NOT good for our town. What it's good for is the owners and the few people we regrettably voted into office who have their hands in this.
