WOW, What a mess, but the over all feeling I get is the majority of people want and need the school budget CUT! I still think this can be done without effecting the children looks like so much top end bloat can be cut and I find it hard to swallow it takes 5 janitors to clean our small school.
Natures classroom and paying coaches can be cut also and if parents and students think this is important they can run fundraisers for these programs. and that brings up another problem lack of parent participation, if parents feel some of these programs that need to be cut are so important then get of your buts and help raise some funds. we as taxpayers and a community need to educate our kids and prepare them for the real world and every thing that doesn't deal with that needs to be cut and funded some other way like they did in the old days.
Special Ed needs to be dealt with somehow our government mandating this then not helping pay for it should be considered illegal! can a town sue government? Why in the world do we have so many special Ed ? 25%? this just cant be right for our small town. What is the percentage of other towns our size in NH?
Just as a example when I was in elementary school our school did not have a sports budget we were a small town and Just couldn't afford it, But every year the parents and teachers and students would find a way to raise enough money to have basketball and baseball even though we had homemade uniforms made by a teacher/coach, But it worked. I know this is a very small example but these are the things we need to start thinking about.

Well said, We are responsible for educating our kids we are not responsible for over paid administration, funding UN-needed programs or dealing with this whole "no child left behind" act that the government forced on us then bailed out on funding it.
If a community cant afford a 25% special needs problem you cant just keep raising the budgets and tax rate it will make the entire situation worse. if we don't have the money we don't have the money....PERIOD.Why are these parents moving here????

Being an advocate for persons with disabilities the cuts proposed by the BC will result in numerous lawsuits. I would not want to be the 6 that voted for those cuts. There is 25% sped in Winchester's school preschool to 8th. That is a lot of lawsuits.

People move there because 70% rent and live in section 8 housing etc. It is pretty cheap to rent in Winchester and the school has great services for many kids. The school buys things for families and helps them gets many outside services for their families. It is a school that has improved over the years. My experience is the staff loves those kids like their own.

The budget committee is not responsible for anything other than cutting the bloated school budget. It's the school board and the administration that decides what gets cut and of course they aren't going to cut their own salaries now are they? Go file your lawsuits just make sure you know who you are suing first.

The school board should just concentrate on giving our kids the best education possible and leave the welfare acts to the welfare office. That's one reason why the budget is so high, they do everything but educate! They think by placating and pacifying they are doing the good; but they are actually doing a disservice to the community and our children by taking away our income to provide for our families at home because of all these expensive extra costs.

Well there is the problem the school needs to use the budget to educate our kids AND STOP PLAYING WELFARE OFFICE.Is the school board aware of this misuse of funds?????

The school brings in huge budget increases, and the voters have no choice? Lawsuits go both ways, and it wouldn't be too far fetched to think that the people running the school will be under the microscope because of their actions. Winchester has one of the highest tax rates in NH. The school system has neglected to address their part in this, and is playing the innocent victim. Last year, they ignored the fact that the state budget cuts would be inevitable, and forged ahead anyway. The state revenues have not returned, and they have increased the budget proposal by another half million dollars. They will spawn a taxpayers group that will take action, and it just might be in the courts.

There were several comments, possibly by the same anonymous poster, that ended up in our spam folder because of content and when we attempted to move them for publishing they either exceeded the character limit or contained words or characters blocked by the filters on this blog. We apologize to those of you who took the time to comment but didn't have it show up and encourage you to try again.

The teachers are using their own money. Not school money so there will be no lawsuits for them.

Dassau has sent a letter to the BOS threatening a lawsuit if they don't reinstate the full budget. What an a$$, has he forgotten the School Board has broken the law and he's a big part of the problem here. What an arrogant self-centered little man, he has nothing but his own best interests at stake, he needs to go.
